Ok

I have purchased a barcode scanner, the Voyager 954X series and have no idea what I need to do to get it wrking. The Casio hand book is useless or very close to it as it does not cover the scanner.

I have noticed one thing though, when I plud the RS232 serial connector it the cash reister stops responding, when removed the led display re-appears as normal. Real odd.

Can someone help me out here some what as im lost and a bit gutted as I thought it may have been Plug n Play.

I wish you luck; I have the same problem. It seems that dealers will ensure ECRs are set up correctly when they are sold as a package with a barcode scanner but there is no information in the public domain to help people who are capable of setting it up themselves.

I bought my ECR from a local business who were upgrading. My SE-S300 suits me perfectly and I didn't think I needed a dealer to help me set it up. I've also developed software before that uses barcode scanners so I know exactly how they work.

I'm hoping that some kind soul here will give me a clue as to how to set up the SE-S300 and tell me the settings required on my scanner. I've tried multiple combinations to date and no joy. There are a couple of YouTube videos but they don't seem to work for me.

Yes, you are right. they are so complicated that the dealer is supposed to set them up before delivery. Remember, the manual you receive with the machine is an operating manual, not a dealer training seminar. There are lots of settings depending upon how you want to use/ install it, which barcode types you will scan, handshaking, not found PLUs etc.
If you want to work through the settings yourself, they use this for scanners:

^ I already have that manual and it does not cover anywhere near enough detail to set up a scanner. It doesn't even mention the standard COM settings used by the SE-S300 when communicating with a PC or serial scanner.

If I were to copy a barcode would the copy still work the same as the original barcode? I would like to copy a barcode just in case I were to lose my original.

Yes, a copy will work fine as long as it has been copied with a good quality copier. also, don't leave it in the sun or it will fade and become unreadable

One thing i know is extremely important is to unplug the cash register from power before plugging in the barcode scanner (turning it off is not sufficient). Try this:

Make sure scanner is unplugged (also, if it has external power source, leave disconnected as i believe this casio supplies power through the rs232 port).
Turn ECR to PGM
Type 3 SUB
You're now in program mode 3
Now you need to see which COM port you're attaching to. If you have 2 serial ports on the side, they might be labeled. Just find out which one is "1" and which one is "2". You'll need to know this for the next step (again still don't have scanner plugged in yet)
If plugging into COM port 2, you will type 0298 SUB
If plugging into COM port 1, you will type 0198 SUB
Next, type 2000 CA SUB
A receipt will print showing the setting was successful (it'll just have numbers on it)
Turn the register off
UNPLUG the cash register
Plug the barcode scanner into the appropriate port
PLUG IN the cash register
Turn the register on. Make sure at this point the screen stays on and the barcode scanner has functionality; it may not communicate with the register at this point if the settings on the barcode scanner are wrong, but it should light up and scan barcodes nonetheless.
