I recently purchased a used ER5420 and am trying to connect/program it.

I bought a usb 2.0 to rs232 (DB9) cable and installed the driver, which my lapstop seemed to accept as good.

I downloaded the only utility program that I could find on the net; 52xxPC utility version 3.00d

When I try to link to the laptop in P key mode, I get the message 'PORT INITIALIZE FAIL'

When you go to My Computer, the till is not visible.

Spec as far as I can see;
ER 2549 EPROM INFO
VERSION 3.3 YCR
CHECKSUM 44F8
BOOT/APP 3811/OCE7
DECEMBER 21 2005

COM PORT 1
BAUD RATE 9600
PARITY CHECK NONE
DATA BITS 8
STOP BITS 1
DEVISE FUNCTION NONE

I'm really at a loss what to do next? Do I need to buy a utility package to reprogram or is there one for free?

Any advice, greatly received. Thanks

there are a few possible problems,
1 : are you using the correct samsung serial cable between the usb/serial adaptor ?
2 : some usb to serial adaptors don't work well (if at all) with ECRs.
3 : have you configured the ports correctly on the pc?
4 : don't you have to turn the key past P to the unmarked S position on samsungs ?
hope this helps

Dave missed the vital clue in your original post

"devise function none"

you have to tell the till that it's looking for a pc on its com port

Made some progress after reading the above posts. Thanks

Changed the device function to PC
Checked the com number on the port (4) and used that ref for the utility.

Don't get the 'port not recognised' now, and utility tries to connect to till, but gives gets stuck with 'get status' and then displays 'register not ready.'

Seems like the com/connection is sorted, but utility not correct.

Displays the message on front screen; Notice; use this utility only for er52xx/m verb 4.1 or later

And I have v 3.3 ycr.

Any suggestion on recommended utility software thta will work on v 3.3?

lol @ dave's response !lolR
wasn't a dig mate honest !arms

back to the case !Chin
ok try this:
in device manager on your pc, choose the com port properties advanced section and force the port number to be 1 or 2. choose either com 1 or 2 on the utility, program the correct port on the till and make sure that you have the cable plugged into the correct port on the till - ie the port you have set up for polling.

next, initial clear the till [i have been informed that the port options do not "activate?" untill this has been done - I have no experience in this as every time i have set up a 5200, it worked first time]

let us know how you get on

back to Dave - wasn't the 5100 utility Dos based?
how does that work with usb - serial converters? - not had the need to go there yet but now i'm curious !what

Indeed the ER-5100 utility is dos based
you can run it on windows XP,vista possibly even 7 ,
the newer versions of windows do not have "dos prompt" but do have comand prompt,
a slight mod to the file and the ER-5100 utility runs fine through a generic serial port.
as for usb to serial converters ... lB I've toyed with a couple now ,and diffrent drivers with no joy.
for PCs it's not a problem because if the mother board does not have a serial port ,you can allways slap a pci card in (though pci serial cards are increasing in price due to people using them to hack tv decoders :o ),for the newer type lap tops with no serial port it's not so simple !Chin
i'm sure there will be usb to serial converters that do work
so if anyone finds one then a recomended or tried and tested thread would give people a heads up on whats good and what is not so good.

I've got a casio qt2000b and a couple of uniwell sx700,ux-m750 to set up and sods law says customers wont have serial ports on their pcs !Head

Still trying my best to program this till, but its proving to be a struggle!

To eliminate the USB to serial cable compatibility issue, I bought a Serial port express card for my laptop and connected to the till via a serial lead.

Set up (both) till ports and did an initial clear.

Receipt reads;

1.Baud rate; 9600
2.Parity Check; None
3.Data bits; 8
4.Stop bits; 1
5.Device function; PC
6.Initial feed line on kp; 0
7.Ending feed line on kp; 7
8.Initial feed line on slip; 0
9.Print line on guest; 0
10.Scale type; NCI
11.Printer type; none
12.Pole display type; epson
13.Eft type; Eft gled
14.Eft config byte; 0
15.Eft currency; none
16.Eft password; 0

I then bought a Sam4s ER 5240 PC Utility program from www.cash-register.info.

Turned the key to P. (have also tried this on S)

When I run the program and try to connect to the till, the progress bar sticks half way and I get a 'register not ready' pop up.

If I disconnect the cable from the till, and repeat the attempted connection, I get the same message. Seems like the till just isn't seen by the PC.

Can anyone figure out what to try next?

Thanks

do an initial clear and try communicate again..

turn off.. turn key to p.. hold dwon cash button switch back on.. keep hold of cash until it prints receipt.. then try again.

sometimes need to flag it after setting up ports.. usually the case for 5200M model
