back to Dave - wasn't the 5100 utility Dos based?
how does that work with usb - serial converters? - not had the need to go there yet but now i'm curious

Indeed the ER-5100 utility is dos based
you can run it on windows XP,vista possibly even 7 ,
the newer versions of windows do not have "dos prompt" but do have comand prompt,
a slight mod to the file and the ER-5100 utility runs fine through a generic serial port.
as for usb to serial converters ...

I've toyed with a couple now ,and diffrent drivers with no joy.
for PCs it's not a problem because if the mother board does not have a serial port ,you can allways slap a pci card in (though pci serial cards are increasing in price due to people using them to hack tv decoders

),for the newer type lap tops with no serial port it's not so simple
i'm sure there will be usb to serial converters that do work
so if anyone finds one then a recomended or tried and tested thread would give people a heads up on whats good and what is not so good.
I've got a casio qt2000b and a couple of uniwell sx700,ux-m750 to set up and sods law says customers wont have serial ports on their pcs
