My grandson grabbed a supposedly "working" Sharp ER-2385.

It poweres up. The printer cycles. The time is displayed. But I can do nothing with the keyboard.

Now, I am technically handy. I checked all the ribbon cable connections, reseated all of them. But no luck.

Now I'm sure that even if I don't know what to actually press, I should get some sort of error and/or beep.

Besides the possibility of a physical problem, is there some sort of hard reset or something that should be performed? I know that the unit has sat around for quite a while as the backup battery was dead and the unit would not even startup for a little while until the battery charged up a bit (or so this seems to be the case). Oh, and any further physical things to check would be helpful.

Any help is much appreciated.

John

Okay. So far I have found how to make a SRV key and did the 6;00 + Journal Feed. That freed up the keyboard.

But now I don't know what to do. Basic function doesn't seem to work. Various button presses result in strange results:

the CONV key shows 4 on the display.
RF shows 3
RA shows 2
CL works
The Feed buttons work.
CA shows the TX2 light.

I am guessing it needs special programming, but how do I do that. Can somebody send me something?

Is there a way to set 'default' operation? A basic mode that a kid can use like a glorified calculator?

I have gotten a little further.

From a search on another site (via Google)

"To ram clear that machine you need to turn the key to "6" o'clock position, hold down the number "9" key, then turn the key to 7 o'clock position. Then enter 90 and hit the cash/attl key. That will put standard program back into it."

That made some basic buttons work. The numbers (except 1 so it may need work). While the decimal point works, the machine does not accept fractional numbers.

Some basic programming is needed. Anyone got a manual?

Yes I have. And actually I found that the single zero key also does not work.

I have disassembled this unit and the keyboard. Checked it out, cleaned it up (even between the contact layers. No help.

Now I have shorted out something putting it back together. What an idiot, I should have pulled the plug. The fuse is still good.

Its about due for a decent burial.

Thanks,
John
