Thanks Mark.
Have located the x/z key. Clerk is logging off ok. Could n't get the programming to work though for the department keys. After putting in the codes for the names nothing happened when i pressed the x/z button. when i pressed the #NS key to get out it just beeped at me. I had to press clr button to cancel entry before i could get out. I used the x/z key to get the reports printing. I also reprogrammed the company name again so def the x/z key is working.
However now nothing is working. When I switch to off the time is not displayed, just a 0. None of the keys seem to be working now. Can't get rid of the 0.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, BY THE WAY.
Valerie

Oh dear. Maybe your machine has a fault. I have had problems with the internal ROMs where keys won't work in certain modes, but it is very rare.
Try turning key back to reg and log in. If you can't or if machine screams continuously (the beeper will scream if you have turned the key without finishing in another mode), then go back to prog and try pressing clear, then ns/#. If it errors, then it means you are not in the middle of programming. Try pressing one of the department keys. This should make the machine print the department's current status. If it prints, then press NS/#

Happy new year!
Mark

Hi again!

No nothing happens whatever I do. The 0 stays on screen. No screaming or anything else. Thought maybe one of the keys may be stuck so have removed them all. But still nothing happens.

Do the receipt feed and journal feed keys make the printer run?

Hi Mark

Yes they do! They are the only buttons that are working.

In that case, it sounds like the machine has locked. I'm afraid it sounds like you have an intermittent fault. If you want to keep trying, there is a recovery procedure, but you will need a service key. Can your key(s) turn to one position past P mode (there is one more hidden position where nothing is written)? If not, then you will need to file a key down to make it into a service key.

Ok, then you have a service key (don't lose it!).

Turn the key to the blank position past P
(NEVER PRESS ANY BUTTONS IN THIS MODE UNLESS I TELL YOU)
Turn the power off at the wall
Wait 10 seconds or so
turn power on at the wall
You should have a single zero on the display
Turn key back to REG and try logging a clerk on, and see if it is useable.

If it's still bad, do the above again, but as you turn it back on at the wall, listen for a beep. If it beeps at that point, you have a keyboard failure.

Ok. Damn that's annoying. There are a couple of other things I can think of.

1. Flat batteries. If the internal batteries get too low, weird things can happen such as bad lockups. However, you can almost always bring it back with the S reset that you just did, so we'll leave that for a second.
2. I have had a bad switch in the drawer before. This can make the machine think you are operating with the drawer open, which sometimes holds all operation. Look under the cash drawer at the back (between the two back feet of the drawer), and you should find a small lever, or trigger in the bottom of the drawer. Flick that, and the drawer will open. I want you to open and close it a few times, then make sure it is closed, and try the keyboard again.

Also, try turning the key to S mode( the hidden one next to P) and press some of the number pad buttons, and see if the numbers are displayed, then press clear, and turn the key back to REG ( DON'T TOUCH THE DEPARTMENT BUTTONS WHILE IN S MODE)
