I have a 7040 when I try to download the program using pc utility I get communication error-8.
It has taken me over a month to get the register programmed and I want to make sure I save the program incase anything happens, I can upload it later. Any help would be great.

I'm most concerned for you with regard to your use of terms in this post!

I most sincerely hope it's a typing error!!!!

downloading infers that you have the program on your pc and wish to DOWNLOAD TO THE TILL

if this is the case, you will have overwritten what is in the till !Head

you then go on to say that you want to store the program for uploading later

you in fact UPLOAD TO THE PC

hopefully the fact that it failed has saved you many hours of reprogramming

the best of luck in your next attempt to UPLOAD the data to your pc.

have you programmed the port on the till to "polling"?
have you set the port on the pc to be com1?

if you get stuck pls post again - but while you are practicing, may i suggest just sending a minor file - such as logo, rather than the entire program
good luck and happy new year
Andy

Thank you for the clarification. !worthy What I am trying to do is save the programming that is already on my 7040. So that if something happens or I make a future mistake in programming additional areas, I can reset to my current settings. To asking my question again-how do I back-up my 7040 to an external memory device? !dunce

I have set it to polling and com1. I still get the error-8 message. Does it matter what version of the polling software I am using?

not aware of any issues with versions on this model [but then again i usually program these by hand or via samstock]

look in device manager on your pc to check that the port is being recognised correctly.
where did you get the cable from? have you checked the pinouts?

I purchased the cable from my local cash register dealer. I have checked the port settings and tried to upload from ECR. During the process I lost all the plu's in manually programmed except the group. The manual for the register and the software have offered zero incite into how or what is the communication error. Any further help would be great.

have you tried something simple, such as programming JUST the logo?
-8 is a time out error

I have tried all the suggestions provided. lB lB I have tried the pc utility software, new cable, V7 polling software. I have checked the pins, port assignments, speed, etc...with no luck. So I am going to move onto a different issue. How do I set the er7040 to report the Z3 monthly. Currently the Z1 and Z2 show up. Thank you in advance for any help.

OK - ONLY THIS WEEK I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE EXACT SAME ISSUE!
WHAT WORKED FOR ME WAS TO CHANGE THE COMMS PORT ON THE TILL FROM POLLING TO SCANNING,
ATTACHING A SCANNER AND SCANNING IN A PRODUCT THEN RESETTING THE PORT TO POLLING.
THIS FIXED THE PROBLEM - GIVE IT A GO
