Hi
I have recently aquired a Sharp XE-A212 cash register and am trying to program it using the pc software. I have purchased a sharp cable from the cash register group and have also purchased a 9-pin to USB cable as my laptop does not have a 9-pin attachment. I have tried connecting up the sharp cable the connecting the usb converter but the program is coming up saying unable to connect, Please please help as I am opening a shop in the next 3 weeks and really need the till
Many Thanks

I think your problem is the USB to serial cable. When that installs it normally makes itself port 4, however the programming utility only has port 1 or 2 as an option. You'll need to change the USB cable settings in Windows control panel.
I can't vouch for the programming utility's behaviour within Vista, but the fact it starts is promising!
I always use XP Pro for these utilities. However it does work in Windows 7 Pro 32-Bit, but must be run as an administrator.

Hi I have set the com port of the usb to serial to port 2 but it is still coming up with the same message, something that a company recomennded was to try to install the drivers for the serial connection which should of been done when the serial cable was connected but no drivers seemed to install

This will sound unprofessional but it does work most times. Completely uninstall the USB cable in control panel, then plug the cable back in and let it reinstall.
Let me know if that works then I can investigate other causes if it doesn't. I did once have to install other drivers to make a USB cable work but I'll need to double check my paperwork!

One thing that is ringing a bell in my head about this. Change the baud rate down to 9600 if the cable reinstall doesn't work.
To do this on the till, go to PGM2 mode then: ST - 32 - X/TIME - 05 - ST - TL
Don't forget to change it in the software too.

There are USB drivers available from this link:

http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

I take it you've made sure the till isn't in the middle of a sale or programming as that will stop communications. Also paper needs to be in it. Failing all that, how are you with checking the cable you got from Sharp? I'm asking because I've never personally used a Sharp cable, I make my own using the wiring diagram in the programming utility.

Hi
I have checked the cable according to the wiring diagram here how-communication-port-on-xe-a212-work-t249.html and it follows the diagram exactly so I now know that it is not an issue with the sharp cable
